Natural Selection teems with life inspired by the myriad materials, patterns, shapes and forms of the natural world. South Africa’s rich biodiversity and rugged landscapes give rise to a multiplicity of artworks and art objects of earthly resonance.
Southern Guild presents Natural Selection, a group show featuring works by South African artists and designers who have taken their inspiration from nature – in material, pattern, shape or form – to produce artworks and art objects of earthly resonance.
This curated offering includes bronze tables by Charles Haupt that take their cue from the thorny branches of the Num Num shrub, David Krynauw’s Ash wood Haywire chandelier, Adam Birch‘s sculptural seating made from the wood giants he fells as a tree surgeon, and Vogel + Plunkett’s Loves Me, Loves Me Not side tables that find their compellingly modular composition in the floral arrangement of petals.
These works appear alongside ceramicist Chuma Maweni’s thrown earthenware, the mirrored oceanic depths of bronzed coral forms by Stanislaw Trzebinksi and Nick Bladen’s preserved plant specimens via his careful process of lost wax casting.
