The GUILD Residency is an international studio programme open to artists and designers from around the world who want to engage with an African context. Established in 2022, it includes the use of a 350 sqm work-living space in the heart of Cape Town’s CBD offering the resident artist an opportunity to explore the motivations, conversations and inspirations that come from being in a new environment with fresh stimulus and exchange.
Rather than a structured programme, the GUILD Residency is largely self-directed and can be adapted to each artist’s practice and their specific needs. It is ideal for those artists who seek a focussed and private environment with few distractions. It is thus important to be self-motivated and to be able to work independently.
Artists-in-residence are invited to develop and implement a project over a fixed period of time with the opportunity to work towards a solo presentation in the gallery or international fair.
The GUILD Residency is a 350 sqm immersive living and working space located on Loop Street in Cape Town’s CBD. The open-plan space offers an expansive studio and an adjoining living area and open-plan kitchen, with three separate bedrooms and two bathrooms. Accessed via elevator from the street, the residency apartment occupies the third floor of a secure, four-storey building.
The space is comfortably appointed with an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary furniture and artworks by celebrated South African artists and designers. Ideally located in the hub of the city, the space is within walking distance from vibrant Kloof Street and just a short drive away from the V&A Waterfront (where Southern Guild’s gallery is located), the district of Woodstock and Cape Town’s many beaches.
