GUILD Residency

• Self-motivated research and development of the artist’s practice, removed from everyday stressors and interferences.
• Rigorous conceptual discussions about the artist’s work and practice with the curatorial team.

The GUILD Residency is a 350 sqm immersive living and working space located on Loop Street in Cape Town’s CBD. The open-plan space offers an expansive studio and an adjoining living area and open-plan kitchen, with three separate bedrooms and two bathrooms. Accessed via elevator from the street, the residency apartment occupies the third floor of a secure, four-storey building.

The space is comfortably appointed with an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary furniture and artworks by celebrated South African artists and designers. Ideally located in the hub of the city, the space is within walking distance from vibrant Kloof Street and just a short drive away from the V&A Waterfront (where Southern Guild’s gallery is located), the district of Woodstock and Cape Town’s many beaches.

• The programme is open to both emerging and established artists working in most mediums, including installation, painting, drawing, photography, digital media, printmaking, sculpture, design and craft-based disciplines.
• The primary focus remains artists on the African continent, but international applicants wanting to collaborate with local artisans and designers are also welcome.
• Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to artistic excellence as well as an interest in experimentation and innovative ideas.
• Curators, cultural researchers, performing artists and other creators in need of a space to brainstorm, research and generate ideas are also welcome to apply.

• The length of each residency is project-dependent, but normally ranges from 3 weeks to 2 months.
• In addition to accommodation, Southern Guild will consider covering the costs of local flights, agreed-upon production materials, and any required logistical and technical assistance.
• Artists are welcome to apply to bring their families or studio assistants with them.
