Established in 2022, the GUILD Residency is an international residency programme in Cape Town, open to artists, designers, curators, and cultural thinkers. The residency includes a 350 sqm work-living space in the heart of the city, offering the resident artist an opportunity to explore a new environment with fresh stimulus. Participation in this exclusive programme is determined through a nomination or direct invitation process, and encourages engagement with the local cultural landscape through the sharing of skills and transfer of knowledge.
Rather than a structured programme, the GUILD Residency is self-directed and can be adapted to each artist’s practice and their specific needs. It is ideal for those artists who seek a focussed and private environment with few distractions. It is thus important to be self-motivated and to be able to work independently.
Artists-in-residence are invited to develop and implement a project over a fixed period of time with the opportunity to exhibit completed work in the gallery or international fair.
The GUILD Residency is a 350 sqm immersive living and working space located on Loop Street in Cape Town’s CBD. The open-plan space offers an expansive studio and an adjoining living area and open-plan kitchen, with three separate bedrooms and two bathrooms. Accessed via elevator from the street, the residency apartment occupies the third floor of a secure, four-storey building.
The space is comfortably appointed with an eclectic mix of vintage and contemporary furniture and artworks by celebrated South African artists and designers. Ideally located in the hub of the city, the space is within walking distance from vibrant Kloof Street and just a short drive away from the V&A Waterfront (where Southern Guild’s gallery is located), the district of Woodstock and Cape Town’s many beaches.
