“Gender is not what people look like to other people; it is what we know ourselves to be. No one else should be able to tell you who you are; that’s for you to decide.”
- Alok Vaid-Menon, Beyond the Gender Binary
An exclusive screening of the short documentary film Alok will take place at The Labia Theatre Cape Town on Wednesday 5 February, 2025 at 6pm.
Filmmaker and artist Alex Hedison delivers a compelling portrait of her friend, Alok Vaid-Menon, the internationally acclaimed, non-binary, author, poet, comedian and public speaker. This thought-provoking short documentary explores the limitless expression of self, challenges societal norms, and inspires viewers to embrace personal freedom beyond the binaries that divide us.
The screening, presented in collaboration with Southern Guild, will be followed by an audience Q&A with Alok, together with other film participants including Llerret Ailith, Thozama Njobe and Cheshire Vineyard. Refreshments will then be served.
The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival 2024 and was named Best Documentary Short at the Sarasota Film Festival, as well as Audience Award Winner (Documentary Short) at NewFest in New York City. Alok is produced by Natalie Shirinian, Elizabeth Baudouin and Megan Lennon, and executively produced by Hedison’s partner, actress Jodie Foster.
