Cornish Pasty, a 2019 work by ceramic artist Andile Dyalvane, has been acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
A gift of Michael Silver through the 2025 Decorative Arts and Design Acquisitions Committee (DA²), the glazed earthenware vessel is part of an extensive collection of ceramics the artist made during his eight-week residency at Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall in the UK.
The body of work, consisting of more than 30 hand-built vessels, platters and bowls, includes references to Cornwall’s coastal landscape, village life and the storied history of the Leach Pottery. Founded in 1920 by Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada, Leach is widely considered the birthplace of British studio pottery widely considered the birthplace of British studio pottery. The pieces were shown as part of an exhibition in early 2020 at Southern Guild Cape Town.
“It’s an honour to have work in the permanent collection at LACMA”, says Dyalvane, "especially a vessel made during my time at Leach - a period during which I welcomed a significant energetic shift, working with an even deeper commitment to internal exploration". He continues: “Any opportunity to show international audiences the complexities, histories, traditions and uniqueness of art made in Africa is something I both relish and cherish.”
