Southern Guild artists Andile Dyalvane and Stanislaw Trzebinski both currently have work included in Digging Traces, a group exhibition that opened on 15 January 2026 at Objects With Narrative in Brussels, Belgium. It marks the gallery’s largest showing to date.

Curated by one of OWN’s co-founders Robbe Vandewyngaerde and in collaboration with Southern Guild artists, the exhibition is inspired by his journeys along South Africa’s coastlines, through its cities, and across its vast interiors. It reflects on land, material, and belonging, and how deeply place informs practice.

Digging Traces represents our personal journey and encounter through this vibrant country and especially learning from their magnificent master-artisans”, explains Vandewyngaerde. “While meeting diverse makers, we realized that they use their unique bond and co-existence with nature as a true driving force in their designs, something unfamiliar for most other cultures.”

Trzebinski, known for his fantastical-sculptural creations that explore man’s tenuous relationship with the natural world, presents three new functional works. In the Swamp of Stillborn Gods (2025) is a vivid aquamarine lampmade from bronze and resembling mutant-like flora, seemingly bursting out of the bulbous base. Trzebinski collaborated with specialist glass studio Kitengela Glass to make the unique handmade blubs. He also created two new tables, each inspired by his fascination with organic life, mainly that of the ocean.

Dyalvane presents two works from his iNgqweji series, inspired by immersive environments such as the desert, forests and caves. The unusual, biomorphic forms, featuring vivid colours and hand-forged copper, were made during Dyalvane’s time as one of the artists-in-residence at the Academy of Ceramics Gmunden (AoCG) in Austria (between June to August 2023). Dyalvane is one of South Africa’s foremost ceramic artists. Guided by a deep spiritual connection to his Xhosa ancestors, his complex, large-scale ceramic artworks are a metaphorical vessel through which he seeks to honour his cultural traditions and share his journey of healing.

About the exhibition, Vandewyngaerde concludes: “The presentation fuels our ongoing goal to cultivate deeper connections between countries known for their craft. Through this cross-country dialogue, we hope to inspire the fusion of ideas, techniques, and cultural influences that continue to shape the future of art and design.”

Other featured artists include Atang Tshikare, Belinda Blignaut, Conrad Hicks, Christine Jacobs, Dylan Lewis, and Jan Ernst, all of whom Southern Guild has collaborated with in the past.
