Two works by painter Jozua Gerrard are on show in In Plain Sight, a group exhibition currently taking place at Hexton Gallery in Aspen, Colorado until 30 September, 2025.
One of the featured works, Different Day, was part of Gerrard’s second solo exhibition with Southern Guild, titled In the Present Tense (2024). This series of glass on enamel large-scale paintings depicts lone subjects in moments of contentment and containment, reflecting a shift towards a more studied gaze. Leaning further into simplification and the essentialising of both bodily and inanimate form, Gerrard’s figurative series is led by atmospheric articulation of colour, considered composition and the artist’s evolving survey of contemporary culture.
In Plain Sight – Exhibition Statement
To look at the figure is to look through it - into histories both personal and collective, into a moment suspended between truth and invention. Figuration is more than a rendering of the body, it can be a way of marking time, place, and identity. It asks not only who we are, but how we are across cultures, landscapes, and histories.
In Plain Sight contemplates figuration as a double gesture, capturing what is seen while alluding to what lies just beyond perception. Paintings become a vessel for memory, longing, and myth. Photography mediates between the real and the constructed, while sculpture pushes these concepts into the physical world. The seven artists assembled explore the shifting boundary between surface and interior, exposure and concealment, and the small slices of time that reveal larger truths about ourselves. In the aggregate, we are reminded that what is visible isn’t always clear, and what we recognize may still surprise us when we have the opportunity to look deeper.
Gerrard’s works can be seen alongside those by the following artists: Andy Warhol, Eric Fischl, Scott Avett, Arcmanoro Niles, Liz Markus and Nancy Friedland.
Gerrard will be exhibiting with Southern Guild at the Aspen Art Fair 2025 where he will also be attending the fair in person.
