'Drift' imagines what the next generation of creative African thinkers could look like.

To commemorate the launch of the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe, Southern Guild gallery commissioned artist Justine Mahoney to design a digital print exclusively for BMW as part of her current exhibition, Mage.

Mahoney has created a limited edition of digital collage prints depicting a pair of cyborg-like figures astride the new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. The artwork uses the same digital “cut and paste” technique as the series of prints in Mage and depicts similar hybrid figures. It mixes science fiction and traditional African culture, nature and the urban landscape, to imagine what the next generation of creative African thinkers could look like.

The collage embodies optimism, explains the artist. “The two characters are carrying so much potential. With their creativity, you can see they are emerging from these circumstances with something completely new to bring to the world… to empower themselves and to empower others,” Mahoney says.

Two large-scale prints of the collage will go on display at BMW South Africa’s Midrand headquarters and at Southern Guild. A series of smaller prints will be showcased at leading BMW dealerships nationwide. A short video interview with the artist and a digital animation form part of the launch campaign for the artwork.

This is the latest in a series of unique collaborations between Southern Guild and BMW South Africa, pairing collectible South African design with luxury-class motoring. Since 2018, BMW has partnered with the gallery on a programme of projects grounded in forward-thinking design and creative excellence.
