"He had the ability to absorb and transform what he experienced in South Africa to create a very powerful body of work.” - Karel Nel
Two works by multidisciplinary artist Kamyar Bineshtarigh have been included in Exploded View: Edoardo Villa and Twenty First Century Sculpture, a group exhibition opening at BlackBrick Gardens, Cape Town on 20 February (until 19 May 2026). Curated by Ashraf Jamal and Gerard de Kamper, this public art presentation places Edoardo Villa’s modernist work in dialogue with contemporary South African sculpture.
Bineshtarigh’s Panel Beaters Wall IV (2023) forms part of the abstract body of artworks produced for his 2023 debut solo exhibition with Southern Guild, 9 Hopkins. This series of expansive, mixed-media paintings is at once an exploration of gestural mark-making and an engagement with the urban fabric of Salt River, an historic industrial area located close to central Cape Town. Sibu’s Studio Floor V (2025) is part of the body of work for the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery, Group Show, held in 2025. The immersive mixed-media works repeat and refine Bineshtarigh’s surface transfer technique in a study of lifted walls and floors from the studios of artists working in South Africa. The series of extractions give form to Bineshtarigh’s curiosity around artists’ creative processes, with each work carrying layers of history and energy from its original site - the studio.
Alongside Bineshtarigh, the following list of artists will have work featured in the exhibition: Hedwig Barry, Sarice Brudet, Peter Mikael Campbell, Richard John Forbes, Jonathan Freemantle, Talia Goldsmith, Diana Vives & Douglas Gimberg, Alexander Opper, Gaelen Pinnock, Robin Rhode, Chris Soal, Edoardo Villa, and Freya Willemoes-Wissing.
