“By focusing the frame on colour in 'Spectrum', I am inviting visitors to narrow their attention and slow their apprehension in order to expand and deepen their personal interpretation of each work and the relationships between them.” explains Key Jo Lee.
The piece Grandmother’s Teachings (2023) byartist Manyaku Mashilo is to be included in the upcoming exhibition, Spectrum: On Color & Contemporary Art at MoAD (Museum of the African Diaspora) in San Francisco, opening 27 September 2023 until 3 March 2024.
Spectrum forms part of MoAD’s fall lineup of diverse exhibitions and will be the curatorial debut of Key Jo Lee, MoAD’s inaugural Chief of Curatorial Affairs and Public Program. Bringing together a multigenerational and international group of 17 contemporary Black artists working in various ways with colour, the presentation addresses the following fundamental question in art-making and interpretation: “How does colour influence the way we perceive a work of art?”
Through a series of thematic groupings, visitors can explore how each artist employs colour to guide their perception and to convey mood, identity, narrative, form, architecture, and more. “By focusing the frame on colour in Spectrum, I am inviting visitors to narrow their attention and slow their apprehension in order to expand and deepen their personal interpretation of each work and the relationships between them,” explains Key Jo Lee.
Other participating artists include Tariku Shiferaw, Stacey Gillian Abe, Sheena Rose, Mildred Thompson, Barkley Hendricks, Delita Martin, Tawny Chatmon, Rashid Johnson, Richard Mayhew, Gabriel Mills, and Felandus Thames.
Mashilo will also be part of the virtual programme running simultaneously with the exhibition. She will be in conversation with fellow artist Sheena Rose on 18 November (12 – 1PM, Pacific time). The discussion will be moderated by Bay area gallerist and writer Jonathan Carver Moore.
