Artists Adam Birch, Andile Dyalvane and Porky Hefer, as well as Southern Guild co-founder Trevyn McGowan, all feature in the newly released book, Proud South Craft. This is the second volume in the series by Dutch trend forecaster, design educator and cultural exhibition curator Lidewij Edelkoort, celebrating the creative forces of the new Global South.
Through the expressive lens of contemporary craft embraced as a tool for transformation, this book highlights furniture, art, lighting, textiles, ceramics, woodwork, basketry, stonework, glass and more.
Through 34 chapters, Edelkoort and second-time editor Lili Tedde bring together a dynamic group of emerging and established creatives from around the globe. As Edelkoort observes: "Craft is the direct link humans have with their ancestors and the beginning of civilisation." She feels this irreversible revival of craft reflects society’s desire for authenticity and tactility, complementing our modern mode of living. More so, craft embodies our urgent need to affirm the power of humans over machines and artificial intelligence. Hence, the idea of an activist counterculture emerges, manifesting with palpable proof that the made-by-hand can become a Proud South revolutionary movement to be reckoned with.
The book follows Edelkoort’s first edition Proud South (2022) and also includes essays from noteworthy contributors, including designers Humberto Campana and Gunjan Gupta, as well as Southern Guild’s Andile Dyalvane and co-founder Trevyn McGowan. Alongside Birch, Dyalvane and Hefer, profiles focus on several other influential artistic talents, including Ana Teresa Barboza and Rafael Freyre, Alvaro Catalán de Ocón, Angela Damman, Vikram Goyal, Rosana Escobar, Andrés Gutiérrez, Fernando Laposse and Adrian Pepe. Additional photographic essays illustrate indigenous wisdom, from the history of nomadic rugs to the landscaping of interiors, architecture, gardens and collections.
With over 400 pages of captivating stories and inspiring imagery expertly designed by Mariola Lopez Mariño of Dutch brand consultancy and design studio Lopezlab, Proud South Craft provides a beautiful gateway to discovering the exciting voices from the southern parts of the planet that are redefining craft, design and culture.
