Mmangaliso Nzuza named inaugural KZN Art Fair Artist Spotlight

              10 Aug 2026 (2 min) read

Southern Guild artist Mmangaliso Nzuza recently participated in the inaugural KZN Art Fair, held as part of the 34th Hilton Arts Festival at Hilton College in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands from 7–9 August 2026.

The first edition of the fair marked a significant moment for KwaZulu-Natal's contemporary art ecosystem, creating a new platform for galleries, artists and collectors while celebrating the province's creative communities. Bringing together leading galleries, emerging voices and a public programme of talks and workshops, the fair expanded the national art fair landscape and underscored the growing importance of regional cultural infrastructure.

For Nzuza, the invitation held particular resonance. Having attended Hilton College, he returned to his alma mater not only as one of South Africa's most compelling young painters, but also as a featured speaker in Creative Futures: Jongosi Visual Arts, where he joined collector and acquisitions consultant Kyle Hutchings in conversation about creative careers and the evolving ecology of contemporary art. The programme introduced high school and tertiary students to the possibilities of artistic practice through exhibition walkabouts, workshops and discussions with arts professionals.

"Attending KwaZulu-Natal’s first ever art fair left me creatively full and overjoyed," says Nzuza. "Seeing so many people engaging and being inquisitive about the younger or emerging artists’ work was a pleasure to see." He continues: "Having the honour of being the spotlight artist for the inaugural art fair felt like a full circle moment - being recognised in the very place where my creative journey began is something special."

Working between cultural memory and imagination, Nzuza has developed a distinctive painterly language that explores intimacy, belonging and the complexities of identity through richly layered figurative compositions. His works draw on personal histories while engaging broader questions of place, vulnerability and representation. The title of the work presented the fair is As The Red-Eyed Dove Sings (2025).

Nzuza will form part of Southern Guild's forthcoming fair presentation at The Armory Show 2026, where the gallery will show new paintings by the artist.
