“The exhibition is, in essence, an exploration of self through the guises of identity, spirituality, questions posed around those who have come before us, and the effects of the past and the present..." - Nolan Stevens, writer

Artist Navel Seakamela’s work will feature in the ArtAngels Charity Auction taking place at the Ellerman House Contemporary Gallery (Cape Town) on 2 November, as well as in the two-man exhibition, As If We Knew, opening on 18 November at the Pretoria Art Museum.

Seakamela’sThe Gaze You Gave II, The Gaze Series will be one of 40 pieces featured in this year’s ArtAngels Charity Auction. The annual event raises money primarily for Click Learning, an NGO that implements software-based literacy and numeracy programmes to help under-served learners in South Africa not only read for meaning, but also to acquire the foundational skills needed to build sustainable livelihoods in the future. A further 10% of the net proceeds are invested back into the arts through the ArtAngels Everard Read Artist Fund and the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize.

Other participating artists include Lucinda Mudge, Jeanne Hoffman, Tafadzwa Tega, Blessing Ngobeni, Sanell Aggenbach, Githan Coopoo, Andrzej Urbanski, Georgina Gatrix and Brett Murray.

Seakamela’s latest body of work comprising seven new pieces of charcoal, acrylic and pastel on paper, will be presented in the two-man show As If We Knew, alongside fellow artist Lerato Motaung. “The exhibition is, in essence, an exploration of self through the guises of identity, spirituality, questions posed around those who have come before us, and the effects of the past and the present – Seakamela engages with these topics through interrogating the essence of being,” states Nolan Stevens, author of the exhibition’s curatorial statement. “This idea of our essence possibly being determined by multiple sources is presented visually to the viewer through this artist’s representation of multiple figures residing within one larger host.“

What makes this partnership interesting is how similar the two artists’ works appear at first glance, yet on closer inspection, it slowly becomes apparent that in fact “this pair of artists are interrogating polar opposite themes in their subjects”, explains Stevens. “Put simply, if Lerato Motaung’s creations are the visual engagements addressing our external physical world, then Navel Seakamela’s works can then be described as visual investigations of the internal world.”

As If We Knew will run until 12 January 2024.
