22 Feb 2024 (2 min) read

Artist Terence Maluleke and Southern Guild collaborated with Soho House Cities Without Houses, Cape Cobra Leathercraft and Klûk CGDT for a glamorous dinner event.

The evening took place in the lead up to his inclusion in the debut Generations section at the Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2024.

Held at the luxury concept store 43 Bree in Cape Town’s city centre, the event showcased Maluleke’s artwork which included pieces displayed on the walls, custom-printed kimonos and a hand-painted bag from Cape Cobra’s collection- the iconic ‘Picco’ - which transcends the boundaries between fashion and art.

Maluleke chose his signature calla lily motif to adorn the bag, an exceptional piece of wearable art. The calla is a flower native to Southern Africa that can bloom all year-round without much intervention and is known for its resilience. These flowers spring up in unexpected places and often bring beauty to the roadside of urban settings. “The calla lily is a symbol of blooming and becoming something you didn’t expect, or going to a place you didn’t expect or have always dreamed of,” explains Maluleke.

The one-off bag which features a vintage wooden handle from one of Cape Cobra’s earliest collections, honours the luxury leather goods brand’s long-held commitment to craftsmanship. “The collaboration with Terence Maluleke is a testament to our shared values of honouring tradition while embracing innovation,” said Justine Schafer, Creative Director of Cape Cobra Leathercraft. “By incorporating his stunning artwork into our meticulously crafted bags, we not only showcase the talent of African artists, but also pay homage to the rich diversity of our continent’s cultural tapestry.”

The exclusive bag is available for purchase at 43 Bree, home to Klûk CGDT’s atelier as well as Cape Cobra.
