As part of the Frieze London VIP Programme, visual activist Zanele Muholi took part in an engaging discussion with curators Fatoş Üstek (Frieze Sculpture) and Carine Harmand (Tate Liverpool) at the Tate Modern.

Titled ‘Art in Focus: Zanele Muholi at Tate Modern and Frieze Sculpture’, the discussion explored Muholi’s approach to building visibility for queer communities through their current transformative solo exhibition at Tate Modern, their significant contribution to Frieze Sculpture and their current focus: a reigniting of their iconic Faces and Phases series documenting LGBTQIA+ people in London, LA and elsewhere.

The event marked the first time the artist spoke about this new portrait project in progress and their plans to insert the final images into the Tate show. Additionally, the panel offered insights into Muholi’s participation at Frieze Sculpture and the broader impact of their work in redefining representation within these iconic cultural platforms.

Many of the subjects captured as part of this new project were in attendance, bringing things full circle with them being present both physically and photographically.
