Mmangaliso Nzuza - Art School Africa Annual Auction
              Editiorial
Works on paper by Mmangaliso Nzuza included in inaugural Art School Africa Annual Fundraising Auction

              26 Feb 2026 (2 min) read

Two smaller works on paper by Southern Guild artist Mmangaliso Nzuza will be included in the first-ever Art School Africa (ASA) Auction, presented in collaboration with Strauss & Co. on 12 March at 7PM at The President Hotel, Bantry Bay.

Building on Art School Africa's collaboration with The President Hotel – host of the 2025 ASA Summer Exhibition Between Place & People – this inaugural auction continues a growing partnership rooted in a shared commitment to Cape Town’s creative community and support for local artists. Intended to become an annual event, it will bring together collectors and leading contemporary artists from South Africa in support of a shared vision: turning learning into livelihoods.

A thoughtfully curated selection of smaller works and works on paper by some of South Africa’s leading contemporary artists will be available, including pieces by Nzuza, Brett Seiler, Boemo Diale and Zarah Cassim. “Together, these works will offer both new and seasoned collectors an exciting and accessible point of entry into developing a meaningful collection," explains Art School Africa founder, Julia Buchanan.

Proceeds from the auction will directly support Art School Africa’s 2026 educational programme, mentorship initiatives, and exhibitions. This includes practical workshops centred on professional art practice, the Ambassador Programme connecting emerging practitioners with industry networks, and exhibitions that create critical market access points for early-career artists. Each initiative is intentionally designed to equip artists with the tools, knowledge, and exposure required to build both a successful and sustainable career in the arts.

Guests will also have the opportunity to bid on a series of exclusive experiences, including a private once-in-a-lifetime culinary experience through the city of Cape Town with Chef Ollie Swart and Ivor Jones of Chefs Warehouse Beau Constantia. Canapés and drinks from Graham Beck, Conte Camillo Negroni, and Cape Saint Blaize Distillery will be served, culminating in a live dessert installation by Annalize Catering.

"Making works for the Art School Africa Fundraising Auction has been an incredible privilege - I am so honoured to be included to support their educational programme", says Nzuza. "I loved that they gave me free rein to produce works/drawings that reflect my current headspace. The sketches may seem mundane compared to the large-scale work I usually make, but it gave me the opportunity to be playful outside of my normal day to day painting. It was certainly lots of fun to experiment."

Apart from enjoying a guided auction experience, guests will have the opportunity to engage with artists, industry leaders, and fellow collectors who are invested in shaping the future of contemporary art from Africa.
