"I use photography to confront and heal, which is why I call myself a visual activist ." - Zanele Muholi
Following its run at Instituto Moreira Salles (IMS) in São Paulo in 2025, the retrospective exhibition Zanele Muholi: Beleza Valente arrives in Rio de Janeiro, presenting an overview of Muholi's work, which blends art and activism in support of their community. The solo opened on 12 June 2026 at the Museum of Art of Rio (MAR), and will run until 29 November 2026.
Curated by Daniele Queiroz, Thyago Nogueira and Ana Vitório, over 100 works are presented, exploring the full breadth of Muholi's career. Photographs from their celebrated series Faces and Phases, Somnyama Ngomyama and Brave Beauties all feature, as well as original works produced in Brazil over the last two years.
