Committed to the decisiveness and precision of working with large and medium format film as well as digital technology, Hedison addresses the interstices between tradition and novelty by exploring transitions between the two.
Each of contemporary fine art photographer and filmmaker Alex Hedison's (b. 1969, Los Angeles, USA) photographs is a direct encounter between the individual and the immensity of the landscape, both architectural and natural. She often focuses on synthetic veils in ordinary environments, identifying a conceptual space between places. A geometry emerges and creates an architectural composition irrespective of context, linking her work to a medium-specific modernity that bolsters her observations of contemporary life.
Hedison presents her work in series, continually expanding her approach to photographic process and image-making. In The In Between (2017–19), she photographed shop windows under transformation in Paris, using glass, reflection and partial views to explore the space between inside and outside, and the point at which one image becomes superimposed upon another. A Brief Infinity (2022–23) extended her material experimentation through camera-less techniques including chemigrams and hand-painted photographic surfaces.
In her most recent body of work, Hedison develops these ongoing enquiries through self-portraiture and double exposure. Returning to the manual 35mm camera with which she first photographed, she exposes each roll of film twice, layering landscapes and architectural spaces with self-portraits. Chance becomes integral to the process as the body is fragmented, obscured and intertwined with its surroundings, complicating distinctions between figure and landscape, interior and exterior, revelation and concealment. The works deepen Hedison’s longstanding interest in spaces of transition while exploring the tension between control and surrender, and the limits of what can be made fully visible or legible.
Hedison received her BA from Antioch University (2021) and previously studied at UCLA (1992) and SUNY Purchase (1987). Since 2017, she has held solo exhibitions with H Gallery, Paris; Von Lintel Gallery, Los Angeles; and Shinsegae Gallery, Seoul. Her work has been included in 10 ANS DÉJÀ!, H Gallery, Paris (2026); Convergence: Contemporary Artists of Armenian Descent, Forest Lawn Museum, Glendale (2026); In Us Is Heaven, Southern Guild, Los Angeles (2025); Beyond the Rainbow, The Bunker Art Space, West Palm Beach (2025); Cadavre Exquis, Craig Krull Gallery, Santa Monica (2022); The Stubborn Influence of Painting, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Colorado (2021); and The Useful and the Decorative, The Landing, Los Angeles (2017); among others.
She has been included in Southern Guild’s presentations at Frieze Los Angeles, Frieze New York, EXPO Chicago, and Untitled Art Miami Beach, as well as group exhibitions at Southern Guild Los Angeles. In October 2026, Southern Guild will debut works from her new self-portrait series at Frieze London.
Works by Hedison are in the permanent collections of the Getty Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Hammer Museum and Los Angeles County Museum of Art, as well as the Beth Rudin DeWoody/Bunker Art Space, West Palm Beach; Shah Garg Collection; and Barclays Capital, London, among others.
In 2024, Hedison directed ALOK, a documentary short film that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. ALOK won Best Documentary Short at the Sarasota Film Festival and the Audience Award for Documentary Short at NewFest in New York City.
