Johannesburg’s Museum of African Design opens with Southern Guild’s most extensive collection of contemporary African design to date. More than 100 designers present new pieces alongside some of the most iconic work from the Southern Guild collection.
Southern Guild presents its most extensive collection of contemporary African design to date for the launch of MOAD, the Museum of African Design, in Johannesburg. The showcase includes work by more than 100 local designers, both established and emerging from across design disciplines. It is fitting that a globally respected African design platform such as Southern Guild should curate the inaugural exhibition of the first museum dedicated solely to African design – presenting brand new pieces alongside some of the most iconic work from the Southern Guild collection, produced over the past four years.
As the largest, most important contemporary design exhibition ever presented in South Africa, the show offers a comprehensive and detailed viewpoint on the country’s design identity through more than 200 pieces ranging from furniture and objets d’art to textiles, jewellery and ceramics. World-renowned architect David Adjaye is the guest of honour at the opening event, which also hosts the second annual Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards.
