The first gallery from Africa invited to exhibit at Design Miami/, Southern Guild presents a ground-breaking collection of work of Gregor Jenkin Studio, the country’s most important furniture designer.

The Gregor Jenkin Studio functions as an engineering environment – a systematic workshop that sets out to come up with solutions to certain problems. Each piece is the result of a search for a new way of doing something old. In this way, Gregor, and his small team strive to create functional objects that are at once thoughtful, and, by extension, thought-provoking. The studio is inspired by hands-on production, well-thought-out engineering, and the beauty of the component and the system.

The Migrant/Migrate collection presented in Miami is an example of subtle storytelling. The collection is a reference to South Africa’s migrant labour history, represented by a herd of wildebeest. The elegantly awkward clutch of tables stands together to form a sculpture, poised. Engrained, a wardrobe inspired by feed and grain silos, taps into Jenkin’s essential enquiry into making the commonplace unusual.

This group of works was part of the gallery’s 2011 collection, made possible by ArcelorMittal South Africa.
