Southern Guild makes its debut at PAD London with a presentation of vibrant, richly textured furniture, lighting, ceramics and sculpture by both established and emerging designers from South Africa.
Commissioned especially for PAD London, Bull Hefer by Porky Hefer is a large-scale leather-clad seating pod in the form of a Picasso-inspired bull, whose gaping mouth invites people to climb inside. Other works launched at the fair include Umthwalo VI, a large-scale ceramic sculpture by Zizipho Poswa, and Sleep Ninja, a figurative bronze sculpture by Justine Mahoney. Master ceramicist Andile Dyalvane exhibits selected works from his iindonga collection, produced during his artist residency at the legendary Leach Pottery in St. Ives, Cornwall – a rugged series whose organic surfaces echo those of the Toolmaker’s Server by artist-blacksmith Conrad Hicks’ and the monolithic Console by acclaimed sculptor Dylan Lewis. Rich Mnisi’s Nwa-Mulamula’s Chaise inspired by the memory of his late great-grandmother makes its international debut, alongside ocean-inspired works by Kenyan sculptor Stanislaw Trzebinski, the Isibheqe server from Dokter and Misses’ acclaimed Kassena series, new sculptural wall reliefs by Chris Soal and a rich tapestry artwork by contemporary artist Athi-Patra Ruga.
