Andile Dyalvane’s work receives Special Mention at 2022 LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize

Southern Guild artist Andile Dyalvane has received the honour of a special mention at this year’s awarding of the prestigious LOEWE Foundation Craft Prize. Another fellow Southern Guild artist, Madoda Fani, was also included in the shortlist of 30 international artists working within an array of disciplines. The jury selected A Time of Sincerity by Dahye Jeong as the winner of this year’s prize and gave another special mention to Verborgen by Julia Obermaier.

Speaking of Dyalvane’s chosen work, Cornish Wall, the jury panel shared, “The Craft Prize Jury admired the piece’s paradoxical combination of both strength and size, and intricate detailing which is crafted using a bonsai brush.” Dyalvane’s preferred medium is clay or umhlaba, meaning ‘mother earth’. The piece was produced using red earthenware coils.
This year’s shortlist marks the first time artists from Africa have been included in the Madrid-based cultural foundation’s annual prize-giving. Both Dyalvane’s and Fani’s works are being featured in an exhibit at the Seoul Museum of Craft Art that will run for the month of July, 2022.
