“Each piece is masterfully crafted in form, shape and surface development, and demonstrates a diverse range of techniques and processes.” - Eugene Hön, curator

Ceramic artists Andile Dyalvane and Madoda Fani are both currently showing work in Shaping the Future of Contemporary Ceramics in South Africa at FADA Gallery (Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture) at the University of Johannesburg. The exhibition runs until 20 September 2023.

Curated by Eugene Hön, Director of FADA Gallery, the presentation is a celebration of the end of his academic career at the university, as well as a showcase of the unique contribution made by some of the country’s most renowned ceramic artists to the development of contemporary ceramics in South Africa. “Each work or installation is carefully selected for its unique sculptural or vessel-like format, often derived from indigenous forms of cultural expressions or glocal ceramic drifts and traditions,” explains Hön. “However, each is also breaking new ground in clay, formed by hand and refined by fire to create dynamic statements that challenge the way we look at ceramics, here and now, and well into the future.”

“As a group, the exhibition embodies a broad range of ceramic functions including expressive, decorative, utilitarian, ritualistic and often complex combinations of the fore,” he continues. “Each piece is masterfully crafted in form, shape and surface development, and demonstrates a diverse range of techniques and processes.”
Other featured stalwarts include Katherine Glenday, Clementina Van der Walt, Kim Sacks, Astrid Dahl, Sinethemba Xola and Hylton Nel.
