Educational programming for Zanele Muholi’s current solo exhibition began this past week, with the first groups of visiting school learners bringing their vibrant energy to the gallery. With student engagement and education through art-making forming a crucial part of Muholi’s educational mission, the gallery is doubling as a space for learning and creative workshops. “Together, we inspire and empower students through art,” says Muholi. A dedicated area within the exhibition has been created solely for purposes of education.
Zeitz MoCAA museum educator Mandisa Ngqulana is facilitating a series of interactive sessions with Grade 10-12 scholars from areas around the city and further afield, including Khayelitsha, Nyanga, Gugulethu, Langa and Worcester, which are set to run throughout the duration of the exhibition. The learners, many of whom have never had the opportunity to visit a gallery space before, are invited to engage, explore and examine Muholi’s body of work.
The sessions involve discussions around portraiture and self-portraiture, with a view towards opening up more personal discussions pertaining to societal perceptions, the struggles the youth face, as well as the change these young people wish to see. The first session, which took place on 1 July with students from Zonnebloem Nest, saw them create their own self-portraits with the help of mirrors, magazines and various art supplies provided.
Beyond the scheduled sessions, the gallery will also continue to welcome impromptu visits by groups of learners, many of whom are often accompanied by Muholi themself. Students have responded with genuine interest and excitement to this immersive experience, often singing and dancing while engaging, with discussions having been deeply honest and meaningful.
It’s these encounters and moments of education through sharing, that ensure that Muholi’s monumental and vital work reaches the young minds for whom it is largely intended.
The exhibition runs until 17 August 2023.
