The extensive collection of sculptural ceramic seating was first presented in Dyalvane’s rural homestead in Ngobozana, Eastern Cape, where his family and extended community had the opportunity to experience it for two days before it was shown at Southern Guild in Cape Town and Friedman Benda in New York.

Documentary photographs of the Eastern Cape presentation are included in the print catalogue, as well as drawings from the artist’s sketchbook and the system of calligraphic ink symbols he devised leading up to the creation of this body of work.

iThongo was a major exhibition with timely relevance and profound cultural significance for Dyalvane, extending outwards to his OoJola clan, the Xhosa people, South Africans of all races, and Black people of African descent. It was accompanied by a short documentary film also made possible with the support of BMW South Africa.

Since 2018, Southern Guild has collaborated with BMW on a series of artist-focused projects founded on the mutual values of creative courage, excellence and innovation. Through its global cultural engagement, the BMW Group has established over 100 long-term initiatives in the fields of modern and contemporary art, classical music, jazz and sound, as well as in architecture and design.
