These exclusive opportunities offered collectors, curators and VIPs the rare opportunity to engage directly with the artists and build a deeper understanding of their work.
BMW South Africa and Southern Guild gallery invited art enthusiasts to step inside the worlds of leading Southern African artists at two VIP events during the 2023 Investec Cape Town Art Fair. These exclusive opportunities offered collectors, curators and VIPs the rare opportunity to engage directly with the artists and build a deeper understanding of their work.
The first event was a breakfast and artist talk at Southern Guild that shed light on the vibrant and allegorical vision of Zimbabwean painter, Wycliffe Mundopa, whose solo exhibition, Pachipamwe (We Meet Again), is currently on view at the gallery until 20 April. Mundopa was led in conversation by Valerie Kabov, co-founder of First Floor Gallery Harare, who helped to bring his work and others’ to international prominence.
The second event was an intimate visit to the studios of internationally renowned Zizipho Poswa and Andile Dyalvane that welcomed guests into the expansive, spiritual journey of these two Xhosa ceramic artists. The mesmerising rhythms of musician Odwa Bongo playing the ‘uhadi’ and the purifying scent of ‘imphepho’ enfolded the visitors in the artists’ mission to connect to their indigenous traditions and repair the social fractures of the past. This unique event also celebrated the launch of Poswa’s uBuhle bokhokho monograph, a beautifully produced publication sponsored by BMW South Africa, which is now available to purchase at the gallery.
Guests at both events discovered the brand new BMW X Series, while Poswa got behind the steering wheel to experience the high-performance expressivity of this luxury-class vehicle herself.
