During the month of July, Southern Guild Los Angeles will host a programme of walkabouts, film screenings and celebratory events with Zanele Muholi that will expand opportunities for access, advocacy and education within LA’s Black and queer communities.

The final weeks of Muholi’s eponymous solo at Southern Guild Los Angeles dovetail with the artist’s birthday on 19 July – presenting a sustained moment of joyous community-building.

With activism a defining feature of their practice, the artist will engage with multiple groups including the Compton Girls Club, Black Girls in Art Spaces, Amplify Africa, Black Image Center, ARTNOIR and Art Muse LA, introducing them to their work within the gallery space and addressing the need for visibility and representation across all sectors of society.

The gallery will also participate in the Melrose Hill Art Walk on Friday, 26 July, with extended opening hours until 8 PM and screenings of Muholi’s “Difficult Love” and "Enraged by a Picture" documentary films.

ZANELE MUHOLI at Southern Guild Los Angeles is open until 31 August, 2024.
