Zizipho Poswa on the second season of the Latitudes Podcast

“I know for sure that this was what I was called to do. It feels right.” – Zizipho Poswa

Sculptural ceramicist Zizipho Poswa joins broadcast journalist Refiloe Mpakanyane, host of the Latitudes Podcast, to share the personal, cultural and spiritual underpinnings of her art practice.

The episode, titledThe Artist's Journey: From start to end, unpacking the overall journey of one of South Africa's most validated artists”, is one in a series of 12 curated episodes forming the second season of the Latitudes Podcast called “The voice of art from Africa”. The episodes are structured across four interconnected themes, the first being “Chapter 1: Flicking Through the Manual (A guide to the Art Industry)”. Through conversations with artists, arts educators and other professionals, it’s focus is on providing practical tools for emerging artists and enthusiasts so that they can navigate the art world’s complexities more easily.

Poswa discusses her rural Eastern Cape childhood, the powerful network of women who raised and shaped her, the ancestral callings that fuel her creative vision, and what it means to contribute to taking African art to an international level.

Poswa’s work has been acquired by several renowned museums and institutions. “Each time I hear the Metropolitan Museum has acquired one of my pieces, I pinch myself. It’s the museum we studied at university. It means the stories I carry - they’re being received, and they’re being felt”, she explains. At the same time though, Poswa also emphasises the importance of keeping some of the pieces at home in South Africa. “It’s also important that we collect and keep some of the work so the next generation has access to it…It’s important that the work lives at home”, says Poswa.

The creation process is also something that Poswa unpacks, explaining: “Form is the most important part of the process. I can have the idea, but if the form doesn’t translate, I don’t do it.”
