Heavy Metal reveals experimental new techniques, metalworking processes and the rich versatility of bronze, copper and steel. South Africa’s mining heritage and metal manufacturing sector meets creative form in the artist-led forges and foundries where this work is made.
Southern Guild teams up with premier steel producer ArcelorMittal South Africa to present Heavy Metal, an exhibition of the most inspiring, contemporary South African design pieces produced in metal or inspired by variations of the material. The show, held at the Woodstock Foundry in Cape Town, presents the work of 48 leading local designers, artists and ceramicists.
Heavy Metal features a wide range of metal works employing new, experimental techniques, including over 40 signature pieces developed in collaboration with Southern Guild directors Trevyn and Julian McGowan over the course of four months. Exhibited across multiple rooms, both inside and outdoors, Heavy Metal celebrates the versatility of bronze, copper and steel, highlighting the metalworking processes of studios such as blacksmith Conrad Hicks’ forge and Bronze Age’s bronze foundry. The showcase spotlights experimental design production using ultra-thin, hot rolled coil produced at ArcelorMittal’s Saldanha Works – and features ceramic pieces that integrate metal elements or metallic glaze, or that provide their own interpretation of metal forms.
The 10-day exhibition includes a programme of creative workshops and open studios, during which time audiences get a peek into some of the more dramatic processes of metal-working such as forging and live bronze pouring.
