For Design Miami 2023, Southern Guild presents specially commissioned and recently made works of collectible design by leading artists from the African continent, including Porky Hefer, Zizipho Poswa, Rich Mnisi, Stanislaw Trzebinski and Andile Dyalvane.
Southern Guild’s presentation at Design Miami 2023 brings together a collection of richly handcrafted objects in which nature’s presence is unleashed in a profusion of forms that twist, morph and grow before our eyes. With an emphasis on three-dimensionality, these works encompass moments of play and quiet reflection, escape and wild release – perhaps best exemplified by the sinuous duality of a snake painted in pastel hues onto Dokter and Misses’ Hug Me Like a Python, LALA Limo Series server.
Highlights of Southern Guild’s presentation this year include a pair of hand-stitched leather seating pods by Porky Hefer, representing a lion and a dove and signalling a turn towards minimalist form. The booth also features a new bronze desk with beaded curtain and a new iteration of the Vutlhari chandelier with scale-like shades by Rich Mnisi, three large-scale bronze sculptures from Zizipho Poswa’s recent exhibition, iiNtsika zeSizwe (Pillars of the Nation), at Galerie56 in New York, and a series of otherworldly sculptural works by Kenyan artist Stanislaw Trzebinski, among other notable pieces.
