Southern Guild artists Andile Dyalvane, Madoda Fani, Porky Hefer and Zizipho Poswa will take part in Homo Faber 2024: The Journey of Life, an exhibition staged throughout Fondazione Giorgio Cini on San Giorgio Maggiore Island, Venice for the month of September.
Curated by the Michelangelo Foundation for Creativity and Craftsmanship, Homo Faber 2024 marks the third edition of the Homo Faber Biennial. Featuring some 800 handmade artworks, The Journey of Life will showcase the craftsmanship behind the objects that accompany life’s most precious moments. Visitors will be taken on a journey through a human life, exploring life’s standout moments and everyday simplicities through the lens of craftsmanship.
With art direction by acclaimed film director and producer Luca Guadagnino and architect Nicolò Rosmarini, the exhibition will immerse visitors in a rich human narrative that weaves its way through Fondazione Giorgio Cini. The works on show include Undlwana I and Undlwana II (Small Ant Nest) (2023) by Andile Dyalvane; Inkomo (Bull) (2024) by Madoda Fani; Shell (2017) and Cyclosis (2023) by Porky Hefer; and Inkomo yeKoyi (2024) by Zizipho Poswa (part of her iLobola series).
In the spaces dedicated to ‘Childhood’, ‘Celebration’, ‘Love’, ‘Journeys’ and ‘Nature’, craftspeople will demonstrate their skills in front of visitors, revealing the techniques that go into creating everything from vases and lace, to jewellery, shoes, writing instruments and more.
Beyond the walls of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the hidden gems of Venice will be revealed through Homo Faber in Città, a programme developed in partnership with Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte (with the support of Cartier and in collaboration with prestigious Venetian institutions). The programme will see 70 ateliers open their doors to the public, an opportunity to witness master artisans and young talents demonstrating their crafts and presenting the tools, materials and skills involved in contemporary Venetian craftsmanship.
