CLAY FORMES is an expansive survey of the medium of clay and the contemporary South African makers who continue to shape the medium.
Southern Guild ceramic sculptors Andile Dyalvane, Chuma Maweni, Madoda Fani and Zizipho Poswa have been featured in the publication CLAY FORMES: Contemporary Clay from South Africa. Edited by art historian Olivia Barrel, the book is an expansive survey of the medium of clay and the contemporary South African makers who continue to shape the medium. Beyond the gallery’s featured ceramists, the publication documents the work of Hylton Nel, Ian Garrett, Katherine Glenday, Ruan Hoffmann and Ben Orkin among others.
Barrell describes the abundant potentiality of the material, sharing, “This publication is about the metamorphosis of clay, illustrating much of what the medium can become: canvas, voice, eggshell, stone, sand, artefact, plastic, wood, metal, or metaphor. This book is the first of its kind – a lengthy dedication to sculptural clay within contemporary South African art.”
Contributing writers include Sean O’Toole, Ashraf Jamal, Caitlin MacDonald, Sophie Cope and Keely Shinners. Southern Guild will host a launch event celebrating the book’s publication on 14 September.
